The Hero of the North: Biag ni Lam-ang

The Biag ni Lam-ang (Life of Lam-ang) is the oldest recorded Philippine folk epic. It was first written down around 1640 by the blind Ilocano poet Pedro Bucaneg, though its roots are purely pre-colonial.

1. The Character Gallery

  • Lam-ang: The supernatural hero who could talk at birth.
  • Namongan: His patient mother.
  • Ines Cannoyan: His beautiful wife from Calanutian.
  • The Magical Rooster and Dog: His companions who help him resurrect.

2. Plot Summary: A Hero's Journey

Lam-ang was born with the ability to speak. At only nine months old, he went to the mountains to avenge his father, who was killed by Igorots. Later, he courted Ines Cannoyan by impressing her family with his gold and his magical pets.

His greatest trial came when he was swallowed by a giant fish, the Berkakan. His bones were recovered, and through the ritual of his pets, he was brought back to life—symbolizing the cycle of bravery and rebirth.
